As above, It turns out my layshaft is the 3 step type, and the 2 spares I have are the 2 step type...typical. Has anyone got one is good condition?

Im also after the C washer for the primary gear, and a verto keyway. I know these are both available from minispares, but they are quite expensive for what they are.

Cheers
Matt

Mansfield - Notts

Have a look on Ebay for the Keyway. I'm after one an they seemed to be a fair bit cheaper on there then minispares/sport.

I have one layshaft of the type that I think is what you mean by 3 step which has the tiniest beginnings of pitting - I'll photo later (need to charge my camera batteries).

It's not 100% perfect but it may well be better than yours.

Ok cheers rod. Mine has a groove worn in it. *oh well*

Where abouts is the pitting? On a bearing surface?

No grooves or I wouldn't have even kept it (it came out of a box I bought only for the later casing).

Batteries recharged (I'd forgotten I put them on to charge last night....).

The pitting is just beginning on the larger bearing area.

Slightly out of focus, my camera is playing up on macro settings.

Just to check that's what you mean by three step....

Matty, with your expected hp and torque I would buy the Swiftune Key (you wont be able to use the bolt though), its not a verto one, but it won't matter.

Anything off ebay these days is suspect, and I wouldnt put any part near my engine without a provenance

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Couldn't get the macro to work right on the camera (possibly too shiney?) so put on my A4 scanner...

It's where they allways start to go but this probably has another couple of years life in it if the oil is kept clean.

But I would welcome other people's opinions as to its condition, I've seen a LOT worse and still running but it's not 100% perfect.

To be honest Rod, both my spare ones had the same pitting at the end, it was unmeasurable with a mic so wasn't bothered. Mine has a groove in the centre of the large diameter bit right where the bearing has been running.

Im guessing its going to be better than a new one from minispares?

Colin - All it says is 'heavy duty'? lol Im guessing by that they mean its made out of a better grade of steel?

An interesting question...

Certainly some of the older stuff (even when worn) is better than the new "copies" but it's hard to be specific on a single item (hence my comment about has anyone else got a view on this).

I'm using all pre-A-plus gear trains in my gearboxes because I think the material is better and the helix angles are better so, as I said, this came out of a gearbox that I only bought for the later (stronger) casing.

So it's a bit unknown but if you want it, just cost of postage as the small beginnings of pitting are just visible.

But if someone has an old one that is perfect (gold dust???) I won't be offended :)

Ah ive just re-read your original post. I thought you meant the pitting on the end, hmm I see what you mean about the pitting on the bearing surface, I missed that first time round. *oh well*

I`m sure ive got a few spare c washer`s.

I can fire one in the post, you could come collect it but for the effort of coming to Didcot and the cost in fuel ill just bang it in a envelope and slap a stamp on it...

I`m pretty sure there is one variation from ie, there is no change from 998 to 1275, a and a+ i`m pretty sure there isent. Maybe someone can confirm this before i send anything out.

The ebay one will be a MiniSpares one - he is a biggish customer of MSNorth. Buys from MS and then sells with a healthy mark up on ebay (although with their fees now that can't be profitable!).
Even most of the descriptions are robbed straight from MS website.
