hello,

i need help choosing a cam for my 5 port 1380.

the car is used for drag racing, trackdays, going to and from shows. going to work (a few miles away) so i need something that can handle traffic but gives me that big boost i want giving me biggest power/torque possible

1380, lightened rods, wedged xdrilled mains and balanced crank, centre main strap, 4 pin diff, 3.6/3.7 cwp (still to be decided) 10" wheels, "trackday" head...similar to http://www.med-engineering.co.uk/product_d...=31&vlang_id=75 45 weber, 7 inch manifold...think thats it.

so...any ideas?

If you use mapped ignition you could get away with something a bit more "radical" in traffic.

On my NA engine i was planning on a 296 scatter.

bmc 544/643 ,
is a bloody road/racing cam.

If you cannot find one as they are more and more difficult to source I would use a piper 285 hr profile which is based on the leyland profile

I ran a swifutne SW10 cam in a 1310 with a good head and a weber. It was very driveable and always put a smile on my face at trackdays.

I'd say Kent 287/SW10 as well. 296/649 do not go well in traffic.

What about the RE13, that looked amasing in JK's 7-port.

If your car is around 600kg and you use a 3.9 or 4.1 diff, you can easily get away with a 310. Mine pulls strong from 3,200rpm in 4th gear and is a pussycat in traffic once upto temperature

I seriously doubt it!

I ran an SW10 in a 998 with a 12G940 head and a Weber DCD. That was the most fun car I have ever driven. It was used in traffic every day and was perfectly civilised. I would love to build another one.

I then ran the same cam in a 1380 with a well ported head, big valves and a Weber DCOE. Again, great fun and perfectly drivable but I preferred the 998 because I ragged it everywhere and it only cost a coulpe of hundred quid so I changed gear at silly high revs

I used a 286 kent scatter cam in my 1330 and it gave me 112bhp. It also had a stage 3 head and hif44 carb. Very lumpy on idle but loved the rev's.

Calver RE13 cam:-

Developed for optimum street-sports use.
Lumpy idle,
pulls from 2,500rpm clean through to 7,000rpm+.
With the right cylinder head and induction system this cam will give blistering street performance and very competitive hillclimb/track day/ sprint performance.
1.5 rockers are required to maximise potential.

649 cam:-

300 degree
3.5-8k
Intake Opens 43°BTDC, Closes 64°ATDC, Exhaust Opens 61°BBDC, Closes 40°ATDC. Lift with std ratio rockers is .323", cold clearance .016"

so which is "better" ?

has anyone ever used the calver cam? johnk had it in the 7 port, how different will it be in a 5 port?

What are you planning to rev it too? There will be little point sticking a massive cam in it if your only revving to 7k.

which is better?

im not sure anyone can answer that as i dont think (?) anyone here has tried them back to back.

lots of people rave about 649's, and im a fan too, they are the business, especially in something like a 1380

if your brave enough, go for it, i doubt you will regret it, and its not exactly the hardest thing to swap even if you hate it...

the re13 is a good cam, but still give this lumpy idle that make your drops clunk clunk ,
the wonderfull 649 is a pain in traffic,
and anythig above 280° will need a short gearing, that'll need too much revs on higway..
The sw10 will give all the goods on road and track , it's certainly the new bl 544/643.

I have a 649 in my NA 1380, its good fun, but its dead below 3000 rpm, and is a dog in the traffic, as you either pull off slowly and bog down and look like ur cars nackered or u have to full on launch and look like a boy racer. I had a 286 previously which was much more driveable but didnt give the kick of the 649

I run a Kent MD296SC on my 1430cc road'n'track car. It's fine in traffic - ran it as a daily for 6 months. I also run 1.5 roller rockers and a 40DCOE for more midrange torque.

Kent MD286SC no question about it. I have built a numbe of 1380 road motors this year with this cam and as long as the engine is setup well e.g. right compression right head right Exhaust, it will pull over 100hp and drive like a pussy Cat in traffic,

I have prity much tryed every cam at this stage from a BL649 to the Kent 310 and of all of them the best road cam has always been the Kent286SC that is accept the VP8C which with out doubt is the best A series cam in creation.
