Rev to about 3,000rpm and pull off as normal. it drives through town at 30mph in second gear, 40mph in 3rd gear and will even pull full throttle from 3,200. This is with a 3.9 diff

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Meeeaaawwww!

Didnt mean to sound an arrogant twat by that but, I built my Sprint originally with a 296sp, it weighed 650kg and showed 134 bananas on Swiftys dyno bench. My wife drove it on the London to Brighton run from Crystal Palace, through London traffic while she was 7 months pregnant - shows how easy a 296 is to drive.

Ive since fitted a 310sp and a Salisbury diff set at 120lb, the 296 showed 140 Baldwin bananas, the 310 shows 155 Baldwins, she has driven it to work and to Tesco for shopping no trouble.

Between Gavin and I we have run nearly every cam out there and we kept putting off fitting a 310 because everyone said theyre undriveable - Bullshit! I say, if there was a cam that would give me more power and more undriveability I would fit it and still gladly drive it on the road.

This thread is about a cam choice for a trackday car, if you fit a little cam - 286 or less you will regret it as soon as anything else powers past you, then spend loads of money changing it for a proper cam.

Paul

I was purely making a pun on pussy. Years ago I was takled out of putting a 276 in a 998, plumped for the 266, waste of time and money. It was rubbish and I swaped it for a 276 within 6 months.

met a guy at the weekend with the bright green drag mini.. sad his wife went to school with you and Ben? I think I have it the right way around..

He running a daft cam (286 I think) a 1275 head (Alloy) and a 45 on a 998 over bore 10something and made 66 at the wheels at our rolling road day.. great and very light car, yet everyone would say you shouldn't but it went very well..

yep, a 256 is probably a very good cam for a turboed 998.

For me this is totally out of the question in a road car. Under absolutely no circumstances would I consider this an option for a road car..

Lads this man talks sence listen to him !
Im not denying what your are saying Paul i have never liked the likes of 266 ect BUT,

I have acutly run back to back Testes with the 286,296 and the kent 310 and I have always with out exception made more HP and Torque Over all with cams of less than 300 druation.

I'm not nocking you HP claims Ider but what I will say is of all the engines I have built some had Full race Swifty heads I have never seen over 140 hp from N/A 5 port A series engine no matter what cam I have used Maby Im missing somthing but I genuinely dont think its there to be made with out boost or gas.

I've re built mine using a 296 ( 1.5 rockers ) but have re worked the head new exhaust and carb set-up, 3.9FD car weight about 550kg ish . and it drives as I expected GREAT....!

Its not a road car but it can be use as one. Nice clutch and the girlfriend has even driven it.

For the next build I'm have my own spec 649 old style cam ground for it. But then again the engine + gearbox spec will be designed to work with it.

Its not just about bolting a cam. But you lot know that.

And this is just the baby test engine.. *wink*

Paul, Ill never say those banana figures are gospel, hence calling them Swifty bananas and Baldwin bananas - people can make of them what they want

Vegard, it really is no harder to drive than my standard 998, in some ways, oddly, its actually easier

Edited by paul wiginton on 30th Apr, 2010.

I seriously doubt it!

Is it because you car is so light compared to a std mini.. so pulling off is easier...

Yea erm.. I just took my short stroker out after having it off the road for 6 months, with webers and bp300. Seriously, once you've got on the power and the rev counters spinning round the guage, past 8000rpm like it doesn't exist, you'll realise exactly why you put up with the minor inconvenience in traffic. Truly awsome *happy*

in case ithelps , i worked out a totally unverified baldwin bhp formula ...

baldwin bhp - 25%+losses (about 18bhp@90mph)=real bhp .

so 155bhp would be 155-38.75+18=134.25bhp.
