Germini, black forrest

Hi!

I had a very odd steering problem; it needed almost force to turn the steering wheel through a corner. But not always. The problem appeared randomly.

First I thought it's a problem with the brakes (eventhough everythings not older than 3 years - but what does it mean nowadays??).

So today I jacked up the car - and had problems turning the wheel. There's a odd rattling noise from the diff area and every now and then the diff blocked with one wheel on the ground. With both wheels in the air, both wheels turn the same direction...

Rethorical question: is my diff fucked or did someone install a LSD for easter? :)

Cheers,
Jan

Diff = Fail

Get it out of there before it makes it's own bid for freedom!

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Yes, I'm actually considering that now...

What makes me scratch my head a bit is that I rebuild the diff about 4000 miles ago. With a 'competiton' pin & bushed planetary gears. Turned freely and had no play when I assembled it. Must have done something wrong?

Jan

That's the problem then, assuming that you use the Minispares competion pin.

The bushed planetary gears should not be used with the competition pin.

I don't know where the pin is from (my parts dealer sells MiniSport & 'Spares stuff), but it was a 'kit' consisting of new thrust washers, bushed gears & pin.

It's not impossible he mixed them, though. I'll see what's wrong tomorrow :)

Hmmm - just had a look: according to the bill it was C-BTA166. So not the 'competition' but 'uprated' pin. Sorry!

Hi Jan,

Sorry to hear of your problem.

Just about all the diff pins available these days are crap. There are one or maybe two that are OK.

You might also find that the fibre thrusts for the diff output shafts have crapped out to.

PM sent

Nail on head!

*hehe!*

[edit] The unsmashed gear's bush is 0.2mm wider! Looks like it was too soft and opened up under load? Would explain the 'crown' of brass that build up...? *oh well*

I'd check the diff housing. If it's worn, the planet gears will not mesh properly on the output shaft gears. Picture?

It's worn now. However, it was like new when I installed it! I took extra care to select a good sphere/diff cage...

Fit a 4 pin diff.

I put a Tran-X one in mine all those years ago...and a damn fine piece it was. The original Withy one broke.

Dont remember either being as cheap as the Minisport one though !!!! Bargain !

my mate had that happen to the box casing, it was leaking oil like hell and finaly spat the final drive off pulling out of concentric pumps car park, it was a 4 pin diff as well, turned out one of the roll pins had failed and let a half pin slowly find freedom.

The casing in my original Withy 4 pin diff were soft, and the pins ended up wobbling free lol

Took out the casing, 1st gear and reverse when it went. Even Tran-X couldnt beat a diff pin.
