Currently I have my PS3 set up wirelessly. The router and modem are down stairs, at the front of the house. My PS3 is in the attic. So signal strength is crap and downloading games and updates is very unreliable. I want to change my setup.

As far as I can tell, I have a couple of connection options.

1. I have a spare wireless modem (from a previous ISP that we no longer use). Can I connect 2 modems to the router, putting the spare modem closer to the attic?

2. Run an ethernet cable all the way from the router to the attic and have the PS3 connection hardwired. That sounds like a pain in the hole and will look untidy though

3. There is a phone line junction box at the bottom of the stairs. Can I run directly from this to the ethernet port on the PS3? The PS3 only has an ethernet port at the back whereas phone lines are RJ11. Can an ethernet cable be wired to an RJ11 port?

Thanks for the help

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

move your router, run a long wire or get a repeater.

you maybe able to use your old isp's router as a repeater, but they often have custom firmware removing all the helpful features.

You can use powerline adapters to run a connection.
Will find you a link *wink*

Here you go:

Something like this should do the trick.

However, depending on the router you have, getting ones capable of 200MBs maybe over kill, as not all routers have 1GBs ethernet connections.
May be better to get the 85Mbs kit they do....

Thanks lad, I can always rely on you two to fix my computer related problems *wink*

BadgerBaiter, how do I set those plugs up? I would guess, put an ethernet cable from the router into one plug, which is plugged into the mains. Then the other one plugged into the mains with a cable running to the PS3? If so, that sounds awesome

Yup, thats the one.
They use the power lines to run the data.
I know they are slightly pricey, but it saves a hell of mess!!
What router do you have at the moment? Do you know if has Gigabit ethernet connections?

That would save running a massive cable alright. Two flights of stairs and going from the front to the back of the house!

Heres the router I have:

Ah these ones don't have a gigabit connection - not a problem really, but the 200Mbs powerline adapters may be over kill. These:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223481

are 85Mbs (obviously) and should be more than enough to download and stream stuff from your pc to your computer... certainly faster than a 54Mbs wireless connection :)
