My mini is taking a bit of a spanking recently, so I am considering taking it off the road for a while and getting everything sorted out.
However, I still need to commute 3 or 4 times a week.. so was thinking of buying an old Golf or Polo...

Preferably without electric gizmos to go wrong.

However, I am not sure what failings the Mark1 to Mark3s tend to have!

Any advice on this would be great :)

Any suggestions for other suitable cars would be helpful too.
Thanks.

Ex GF had an N reg 1.0 Polo. Bombproof, nothing ever went wrong with it. Just watch out for rust on older VW's.

i ran a rover 200SDi as a daily hack for the last few years, all it needed was brakes and tyres, and jsut flew though another MOT, very cheap motoring as no-one wants rovers! wee boost tweak and home made "chip" and it was pretty nippy too!

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

I have a p plate astra tds sat outside my house at the moment. full test and a bit of tax, cost £500. It's got the isuzu engine so you can add a bleed valve, up the fuel and set it to 1bar of boost and bob's your aunty. fast reliable cheap diesel.

Is it purely for a runabout, or do you want a specific type of car ?

There are plenty of very cheap to run and reliable cars around for a few hundred quid.

As Tom says....the older VW's can rust a lot if thats what you're after ( 80's or early very 90's cars )

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

My first thought was a Golf or Polo as I had always thought they were pretty failproof, which is what I want really - something which wont break down every month!
Saying that, if I can't find a VW any other suitable car would do me fine.
As long as its cheap I don't care what it is to be honest.
Going to have to keep my eyes peeled
