hi i'm just setting the end float on the crank and fairly new to this... i've searched and i'm aiming for around 0.006mm? but i'm getting strange readings from my dial gauge

Don't use a screwdriver. Use your hands only. With a screwdriver you can get sufficient leverage to make the clearence what you want.
