Ive just bought an extended crank damper bolt (the cap head type minispares sell) but I can't find anywhere that sells single hex bits. Im after 1/2" drive 1/2" hex size.

Anyone know where to get one from?

Cheers
Matt

Hex bolt for the crank damper? What a terrible idea bearing in mind how tight you have to do it! Sounds a recipe for rounding off!

Well it has been sold and used for quite a lot of engines for 10 years at least, and I have never heard about any other problems other than it being a bit too long for some cranks, so I do not think that is a problem if you have the correct tools

I ended up making one from a 1/2" allen key cut down welded to an old 1/2" drive 13mm socket.

probably because most big torque wrenches are 1/2" drive and you need to use a big torque wrench on that bolt

1/2" to 3/8" drive converter?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Ive just bought that set on ebay for £8. I tried using an 5/16 bolt with a spacer and nut welded to it in a desperation but it just twisted under the torque. *oh well*

At least im not the only one thats had this problem by the sounds of things.

You sound like my kind of engineer, Tom.

Why spend money when you can make it - and you dont need to wait for the postman.

I hate not being able to finish a job and having to wait a few days for things to come, it is amazing what you can come up with given a bit of ingenuity.
I also had to make an extra long reach 8mm allen socket to get to the KAD head bolts on the DON.

Mad idea I know, but why not go to a shop? I know it's a bit old fashioned, but it might just work *wink*

Good idea in principle, but you try and find somewhere with one on the shelf!

I needed a 3/16" hex bit for the DON, tried everywhere I could think of in Sheffield and Rotherham, no joy. Had to order one.

^^^^exactly, with it being imperial it makes it even harder to get hold of. We have some good tool shops around here and none of them stock anything above 10mm!

There's a really good tool shop at Attercliffe near the railway lines. Had loads of this type of thing in, but I wasn't looking specifically at them....

That is what I did for the 17mm hex on the driveshaft doing the cv gaiter on the Passat last week after buying the special tool that tom recommended for the clips. Turned out the bloke was only 12 miles away!
