i started polishing my rods yesterday, and i just want to check if i'm going about it ok, i know its probably a bit ott for my engine but i thought seeing as it only costs me time then why not.
this rod is not finished yet, its not smooth enough but can you let me know if i have the right idea before i move on the rest, and if i have done it wrong does anyone have a spare 998 a series con rod for circlip fit pistons?
thanks in advanced..

DAN :)

When polishing rods the most important thing is to make sure you don't leave any grinding marks on the rod at all as even the slightest mark could act as a stress raiser and possibly lead to failure. Also I have read somewhere that you should always polish up and down the rod, never side to side, again for stress raiser reasons.

Also a tip for you, be very careful with the circlips on the pistons, they are crap and if they escape they will score your bore and knacker you block. Says a man who has done this before!

You can get some PTFE buttons which sit in the end of the piston and either stop the clips getting out or maybe even replace the clips all together (not sure which)
Anyway they are dead cheap so make sure you get some! I kicked myself when I didn't on an 1098 engine I built and a clip got out.

Remember to have the rods straightened and honed after such an exersize. The removal of the outer material WILL result in the material shifting slightly.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

You could get them shot peened afterwards to further reduce stress

It supposed to remove the surface stress risers and help prevent the rod failing due to cracks forming.
Just remember though it?s only on the surface and flaws can be hidden just below the surface or even deep inside the rods.
Rod polishing is a good thing if followed up by shot peening as this is done to introduce a compressed surface, thereby reducing chance of crack initiation.

Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.
