Hi all

What would guys suggest would be the best starter for my Marcos. Running an 8v Twink, approx 10.5 compression, and a pre-verto clutch/flywheel setup?

Thanks

Matthew

an inertia one, assuming you have the std ring gear on the flywheel?

Hmm. Now I feel a little stupid... The flywheel was supplied by SC. Looking at it, how would I tell the difference?

Count the number of teeth on the ring gear.

107 for inertia starter and 129 for pre-engaged.

Obviously usually the 107 is on a pre-verto assembly and the 129 on a verto but the specialists often put the 129 on a pre-verto flywheel to allow use of the later starter motor. (mine is setup like that).

Then in that case, a Pre-Engaged Starter will be needed... Whats best?

Can't really comment specifically for a Marcos but if you are looking at standard items the Mini version and Metro version are subtely different - the solenoid is dead front on the more common Metro version but moved upwards and inwards on the Mini version (as the Mini required more front clearance).

I have loads of space infront of the engine, but obviously I need to clear the throttles. Just wondered if the uprated ones are worth the difference, or if they are needed for the higher compression rate?

If you want the best then get a proper modern starter. Something like this:

I am not suggesting to buy it from there it is just the first place I found one.

I bought mine from Moss when they had a VAT free day, and its pretty much identical to the one linked to above.

The pre engaged starter should be more than enough though. I only bought the high torque one to save a little more space at the front, but given the choice again, i would buy another.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
