righto, had to give up on this tonight after much head scratching, anyone know how to get the boss off?

tried undoing all the bolts, but this just loosens the pulley and the outer fan blades

is the hex part of the pump shaft or the fan boss?

if part of the boss, how do you lock the pump?

cheers all

Ive only ever removed the viscous coupling off my e30, I just had the car on all fours, in gear and undid the bolt which held it to the water pump, from memory was itro 36mm and there was a specific slim spanner for the job, hope this helps.

theres no belt on it at present, so unfortunately not an option :(

just saw on one on ebay that the hex is part of the boss, so ill try one of the boa grips on the pulley tomorrow

ah, alas, my fan is a different design, and the fan blades mount the boss from the rear (engine) side, so the boss is sandwiching them on.

ill perservere tomorrow night, at least and know what the hex bit belongs to now

You need a thin spanner if its the smiley faced Tranny with 2.5 di lump. Air chisel or a blunt chisel & hammer normally does the trick. :)
When you put the new one on, plenty of copper eez' and don't over tighten.

Can you use the fan belt (on pully) wound tight with a breaker to lock the pully? Have used this trick in the past to hold a crank pully, it does usually render belt useless tho.
