Durban KZN - South Africa

Hi there guys

Names Sean, live in South Africa - I bought a few bits of some of guys on here.

BUT now its time to ask some advice.

I'm new to the whole Mini Turbo bit, but have got a self built 1600 16V GM motor in my other car, it's running 0.7 bar (10 PSI I think) with a TD04 giving me 200bhp at the wheels at 6000rpm, so not new to the whole Turbo bit.

Anyhoo, i just bought a complete metro Turbo set up of a guy locally who bought the lot 11 years ago in the UK, but never put it into the car and he is now going 1300 Toyota Starlet turbo so i picked up the whole lot.

Anyway, i'm looking at the T3 Turbo and it is a SHED load bigger than the TD04 i'm running on the 1600 Opel - would i be better off getting a smaller Turbo for the 1293 that would spin up quicker for the Mini ? and make a plan to fit it to the Metro exhaust manifold ?

nothing worse than Turbo lag, which i'm assuming will happen with the T3 (or am i wrong ?)

Thanks

Sean

A more modern, more appropriately sized turbo is definately a good idea for a turbo a-series but plenty of people still get great results with the T3.

It has however been proven that something modern like a GT1752, TD04 etc produce the goods and offer better tractability than the T3.

The main reason a lot of us still use the T3 is down to price, availability and ease of fitment.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

the td04 is something i might try, the dodgy inlet flange means down the back of the block between that and the bulkhead might be tough though

Isn't the TD04 a bit on the large side?

They are readily available (compared with the gt17) so i had considered one for mine, but I was put off after a few discussions with other members.

To clarify, I'm talking about the TD04 as fitted to the Saab Aero's.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Sean the GT1549 like Im using is a good choice and available brand spanking new Japan Auto trading in SA, the only problem is that the exhaust flange is triangular and not square.

The TD04 is also a good choice but I do remember that the Saab guys use it as an upgrade to the GT17.

Here is a pic showing the diff between the bigger T3 and the TD04H as fitted to my 1600 16V GM motor.

Also when i bought all the stuff i got a block that had been freshly bored to take these good used old stock pistons - they look OK and are fitted to GTS rods (Innocenti) with a deep dish.

Do you think they will be OK for low boost ?

Turns out the pistons are from our local 1275E circa 1980-1983 and ran a compression of 9.4-1.

I'm thinking of aiming for between 8.5 and 8.8-1 similar to my other car, would i end up with tooooo much lag with the T3 ?

Was considering moving it on and getting a T2.5 or similar, but there doesn't weem to be to much of a market for it locally, as most of the boy racers got t3/t4 hybrids.

Where will the boost come in with the T3 at 8.8-1 ?

Sorry to drag a old thread up but how come you say to bin a T3 mike?

Just because of the lag it has?

If in doubt... flat out! The words of a true legend

its just a very old design, even a modern equivalent of the t3 out performs it massively

I quite like the T3 on the van. It's a bit like:-

slow, slow, slow (few more revs) go, go, go!

I would probably like a modern turbo more though.

wolfhound are you still around?, could you tell me what car/engine that td04 is off? is it the saab?

edit, as a bonus the impreza td04 is water cooled, i dont think all the td04s are, all the parts look interchangeable (across the entire range) there seems to be 2 different compressor designs though which are not interchangeable

Sorry man, i picked it up 2nd hand for like 75 Quid in your monney, turns out it was nealry stuffed then spent another 300 quid getting it repaired as a new one was over 500 quid here.

On the 1600 its already on boost at 1700rpm. so practically no lag.

I've beed offered a T2.5 loacally but its like 600 quid and i would be lucky to get 200 quid for the T3 even though its fully re-conditioned.

Either way, bin the old T-series. They are....old.

Almost any modern turbocharger will be better in every respect, and usually more compact too.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

I like the lag then off we go.

Understand what your saying about more modern turbos and less lag.
