I have a problem with my road car in that when driving along exhaust fumes are entering the cabin. It is worst if I have the front windows open, but does come in through the rear quarters if open.

I am thinking of extending the exhaust further beyond the valence to see if that makes a difference.

I am 100% sure that the exhaust is not leaking so it can only be coming out of the back. Does anybody else have this problem? Or ideas of how to improve the situation? Or am I being a girl because all minis are like this?

yeah my mini used to be the same, after a longish run id get out and feel nauseous, but we did have a lot of holes in the front and rear baulkhead, and the floor (shell had been a racecar) so we plugged them all with grommits and it seems to be better. but still get it a bit. i agree the aerodynamics arent too good and it must swirl back around to the front from the rear.

maybe its not coming in the windows but up by the gear stick, the windows being open 'suck' air out the engine bay i ran for years with no gaiter on the gear stick and not untill i got the clubby ( witch has a gaitor) did i notice the difference

How are the breathers plumbed, I find that when not into the carb the open breathers give a similar 'flavour'.

Maybe put them into a tank or put the pipes to exit under the car.

That is not a bad idea Wil. The breather is plumbed into a bottle by the rad so is not too badly positioned.

I am pretty sure it is the exhaust though as it is better since I leaned off the cruise and get very bad when you give it some throttle.

have you tried blocking the exhaust while the engines running for 10 seconds or so to find any leaks? ben.

if there are none the problems in the breather departmenttry mounting one under the top of the wing.. one of those that endaf makes should sort it

Mine is the same, fumes come in when I open the front windows. My exhaust doesn't leak and exits upswept from the centre of the valance. I have often wondered if i'd get less fumes if the exhaust exited from the left of the car

Check the condition of the boot lid seal. Its a common problem. I have however, been chasing the same problem, but not yet fixed it, its deffo coming in through the boot, as I had a jacket in there, that had an aroma of exhaust fumes on it afterwards.

Slight update. I double checked the exhaust and there are no leaks, as I thought.

The single breather on the engine is fed into a bottle mounted between the radiator and the inner wing. Therefore any fumes are blown out by the fan. I can't see it being this.

I think sprocket has found the answer. Checking the boot seal I can see it is not touching along the bottom lip. I will see if I can improve the seal and report back.

Thanks for all you ideas, any new ones are still welcome.

we had to pick up some stuff in a transit once with the rear doors open, and the front windows open as well, the van filled with exhaust fumes but not so much when we closed the windows.
