Looks like we need helmets for Avon this year, so I'm going to have to buy one.

Had a quick search, but all I found was Fast Carl being rude *wink*

Can somebody explain the basics to me, sizing, spec's, standards etc

Thanks

Snell or FIA approved is the first point of call. I took a biker boff with me to advise buying. Don't buy online until you have tried it on. Different manufacturers suit different heads....I found Sparco the most uncomfortable...so don't go by sizes. Same as buying clothes....set size doesn't fit all!

For the purposes of RWYB days easiest and cheapest is to buy a bike helmet.

As above go and try some on £150 will get you a decent one, you can spend less, you can spend more.

If you want to do even a hillclimb you'll need to buy a specific motorsport helmet as bike ones are no longer acceptable after this year.

If you want a cheep, good quality helmet try here:

http://www.hedtec.co.uk/

Approved for racing, etc. I know buying a helmet online is not ideal for fit, but I am happy to do it as my helmet is never on for long so massive comfort is not a priority.

i can recomend the Airoh SV55 flip front lid, its great ! mine has the scala rider intercom kit in too, so you can hook up to someone else with a kit, a phone, a satnav, ....all at once ! not that you need it for 1/4 mile *smiley*

always get ure head sized before purchasing a lid. I have a Bell touring open face job which i used for Rallying better visability but you should wear clear lenses or risk getting stuff in ure eyes in a bump etc....

Allways check the manufactured date of the helmet as the outer shell is nominally good for purpouse for 5yrs after manufacture.

Also check the weight of the helmet as for motorsport the FIA legal minimum weight is 1kg
If you think this is wrong correct away.

I'd be interested in a group buy, but I think I need to get my head measured and try a few on

Whats the word with the Metty then? You going to repair, rebuild and upgrade this year and be back next year?
