since changing the engine and gearbox ratios in my mpi for something a bit more livlier the oil temp gauge rises on trips along the motorway. usually it stays below 100 degrees

today though in the heat it rose up to 120.

i know minisport sell an oil cooler kit for mpi minis. im looking into getting one.

do people think this is a good idea? was doing around 70-75 on the mway, at around 4k revs, from bristol to south wales, so not a huge dstance

the water temp stays within normal limits.

the oil is topped up

also the other day i went to buy some oil for a mini service. since halford own brand wrecked the gearbox on my old spi with just 25k on the clock, i have used castrol gtx. this has always worked well for me. it seems that they have now brewed up a new 'recipie', suitable for petrol and deisel motors, with 'anti sludge' compound. im guessing the plain old gtx will be phased out. anyone got any ideas on what oil i should be looking to use in the future in my mpi?

many thanks

Millers CTV seems to be the best. Castrol 20/50 XL Classic also sounds good on paper.

The oil I use in my race car is Ok up to 140degrees. I see 110-120 regularly with no cooler and that's fine.

15w50 mobil1 100% synth
or 15w50 motul 300v,
for less powered mini's I'm using motul 3100/5100, price dependant
As veg said they're not feared by 120°, i'd just put an oil/water exchanger.

comma classic 20/50?, it doesnt like getting too hot if it is i think i discovered that the hard way

coincidently the copper stuff my gearbox spat out is some sort of thrust ( not main / bigend bearing as i thought) and i think that is gearbox related, it seems to have damaged the bearings though oil pressure is still down, it consumed 3 gal of the comma stuff in 2000miles too, weird how the 15k before that it only used 1L

I'll give it a pop and see how I get on.
