I have an ultrasonic cleaner and it is very good at cleaning parts. I've found dishwasher powder works wonders.

It is similar to this one but with knobs and dials rather than digital displays. I didn't pay anything like that either, but it was 4 years ago.

I use Altrans Acidic metal cleaner, not good if you get it on your skin but works wonders on crap and rust
