Just wondering,

had a little problem on saturday. Left my car park facing backwards on a slope and couldn't seem to start it. i thought id ran out of fuel but I hadnt. Eventually got it started.

Was wondering if it was a fuel problem and the fact I was parked on a slope? Or is that stupid?

Is it worth putting a small non return valve into my fuel line? Like a check valve.

If so where should I put it?

Cheers

James.

surly the pump pumps it otherwise you would run out of fuel going up a long hill!!

When you parked it up, the turbo was still very hot. It basically boiled all the fuel out of the float bowl in your carb. You had to wait for it to fill up again before it would run.

Ahhhhh, that could be it. Hmmm. So do you just leave the fuel pump running for a while before you start it.

I believe Mr Vizard says you should let a turbo motor run for 30 sec or so before switching off or setting off on fire up and shut down. Not to sure how much good such a short period off time can do?

Haha, i always try to let it idle for a while before switching it off but iv no idea how much good it would do.

Turbo blanket would prob help heaps in the way of boiling the fuel I expect...

That run on period is to allow the turbo to cool down a bit with oil flowing through it.

The metro turbo had a solenoid valve that vented the float chamber to atmosphere with the engine stopped to allow fuel vapour to escape. The manual also gave instruction that when starting a hot engine, the throttle should be pressed to the floor.

I believe Vizard said if you don't you can boil the oil that will be left in the turbo, but surly it cant cool that quickly. I can understand the theory but surly 30sec cant do the job

It all depends on how hot the turbo is and how much therefore you have been towsing it.

Whenever I stop on the motorway with my turbo diesel and especially if I have been towing, I idle it for 2/3 minutes.

Likewise after a run on the strip(not with the turbodiesel of course)

Any other time, like ordinary motoring when there has been a period of light running following some hard work, I just switch off as usual.
