I need some skirting board making up, wondered if anybody on here was good with wood or could recommend somebody local to me. You lads seem to know everything...

It looks like the stuff in the background of this pic. It's about 12" tall. Section needs to be about 4 meters long.

thank you please.

When I needed some special architrave for our old house, I took a piece to our local timber merchants.

They bought in the tooling and materials and cut a load to match.

You would need to buy more than 4 meters to make it worthwhile though.

We have a "proper" timber merchant only 40km from me - they have a "spindle" - which in wood terms is a large milling machine - that can do anything, just give them the profile and they make it.....

There must be proper timber merchants near you to ???

I have to go 40km for civilisation, you should find it easier ???

leeds/wakefield.

Andy ,if you have to have cutting tool made for a apindle moulder your local timber merchannt/joinery shop will charge you min £100 , and theres uysually a min amount they will run off ,

your best bet is to fabricate some shirting, in individual lengths,

easy enough if you know what your doing,

Thanks for the advice Carl. I wasn't expecting it to be cheap. I guess once they have the tool they'll be able to make more relativly easily. That skirting is all over the house and the last owner was a bit of a bodge artist!

Because it would look shit. 3 walls with 12" tall skirting and 1 wall 5" *wink*

Relatively expensive is not a massive issue when it comes to the house (wifey chips in a bit), I've got used to it. Every room has to be gutted when I get round to it....

Carl is right about the cost if a new tool has to be made up for the spindle but if you find a long established company, they will most likely already have one.

I don't know if they are all the same, but the tool the place "near" me used was a vertical spindle and the "tool" only did the profile at the top, they just mounted it at the right height on the spindle and fed a rectangular plank through which was already planed on its front face.

Rather than a minimum quantity, they just charged a set-up / tear-down fee and would then do as little or as much as I wanted.

It would still look shit! The ceilings are 10 feet high, the skirting is the size it is to keep the scale right.

The current stuff looks to be made from 2 pieces - a plank with a rectangular piece with the profile cut into it fastened to the top.

The problem with this house, or at least one of the problems, is that it was built as a bespoke house for some local pawn broker and nothing is exactly of the shelf...

What a bodge...... *happy*

OK I suppose if it's being painted, but we wanted stained/varnished so it had to be done in one piece.

Lavers have no end of tools, then make it to your sizes.

If you visit the warehouse you can select the profile.

I had 300ft of 3/4" tulip wood done in a tounge and grooved style and it was about 300 quid. That was delivered as well.
