A mate of mine has just bought a 2003 WRX and wants me to do the cambelt.

Anyone done one of these before, anything in particular to look out for, any special tools needed?

I spoke to a friend who'd done his on his forester as I was looking to do mine soon. Apparently no special tools are needed, the marks are easy to spot and the auto tensioner makes it a straighforward job.

Excellent, that is what I like to hear! I've sent for a £1.99 CD manual from ebay so will see what that comes up with.

I had my legacy one done at a garage (I supplied the belt) I asked that he change the spark plugs at the same time. Labour for fitting the belt was £20, labour for fitting the spark plugs was £40!. Said it was the easiest timing belt he'd ever done (even with 4 cams) and the hardest spark plugs.

Interestingly, my legacy with the H6 engine has a chain.

Somewhere around Swindon

i did the belt on my impreza found it a little time consuming but not a bad job, one thing to look for Tom is there are two dots on the crank pully, only one dot is the timing dot you need to look for the one that was 180 degrees from the woodruff key iirc the other is 90 degrees

Easy peasy job if you remve the rad fans(sometimes I pull the radiator) , hardest part is getting the crank pully off if you don't have a proper puller.. Marks are all self explanatory.if you get a genuine belt it even has wee painted lines to match the pullys :) sparkplugs are harder on the later cars cause of the air pump and other emissions crap is in the way!

Be a walk in the park for you tom, access is great!

£20 for changing a cambelt ?

In anyones book, that's plain crazy. Even more so has he said the plugs were hard !!!

Plugs are a 30 min job. No way in hell are you ever doing a cambelt in 30 minutes.

If you get a proper belt, it will have lines that line with all the timing marks, so there is absolutely no chance of getting it wrong.
When squeezing the tensioner up in a vice, do it very very slowly. Allow maybe 10 mins or so. Doing it too fast can damage them.

But generally speaking it is quite straightforward.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

...a bit cheaper than changing the VW Passat TDi cambelt round our way then @ the average garage price of £350 lol.

thats cause its a bumper/support/radiator/AC condenser/headlights off job just to get access to the timing covers!
