Chaps, im going to fit rear discs to my mini, I recently won those early works arms off ebay, does anyone have any recomendations for the calipers? I know some use quad ones with go kart discs.

However im after some calipers that have a hand brake attachment? Anyone know of any that can be used? The discs currently on the arms are S ones.

Oh and is it true that handbrakes arent a part of an mot for pre 68?

Cheers

Mike

I've thought about doing this before and think 205 GTI calipers could work, although it depends if they will clear the inner arch.

Anyway I have a scrap one you can have to try if you want.

You just have to be careful with sizes. Mini rear brakes don't do a whole lot. I would bet the most modern car rear calipers would be big enough for the front, let alone the rear. The advantage of car calipers is that they have the handbrake incorporated. Well some do, the modern way is to have a caliper and a separate drum built into the disk for the handbrake. You need to consider this if it is for a road car.

Same as 205 GTI I think. Clio, R19, 106, 206, 306, Saxo, Xsara all the same.

What is the point even with the KAD ones you are talking a few grams less than std set up? With big car calipers you'd be increasing the weight! Also my drums have plenty of efficiency for assisted rear turning!

Mike.

I've seen Peugeot 306 rear calipers or Skoda Fabia ones used by other Mini modders, albeit with 13 or 14 inch wheels, not sure they'd clear 12's, probably not 10's.

Or there are a couple of car accessory places like Demon Tweeks that do hydraulic rear calipers with cable operated handbrake mechanisms.

Not sure about the MOT test for pre 68 handbrake checks, someone else might be able to advise.

And Scruffy - as for advantages : self compensating brake wear for one, no adjustments required, even for the MOT, no seized adjusters, no leaking rear wheel cylinders infecting the shoes ....... and yes, less unsprung weight.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.
