Is there any difference between a normal i.e mg metro N/A engine inlet manifold and the one on the mg metro turbo?

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Reckon i may have a spare. Not 100% though.

If your using mirage manifolds though i think you use a NA inlet manifold. *happy*

I'm pretty sure the normally aspitated MG manifold will fit and clear the Turbo exhaust manifold. It was ages ago when i tried it but i'm sure it was ok, the only problem being the thickness of the flanges where it bolts to the head face, as the normal MG manifold flanges are a lot thinner. You could make up some "stepped" washers to solve this though.
Yes, the normally aspirated manifold can be used with the Mirage kit.

Mirage are a large raqcecar preparation outfit, and spend quite a lot of time out of the country, or are very busy. I'd try calling them, or send an email with the subject reading "want a manifold, money is in my hand" and see if that promotes a response!!! *laughing*

Just Registered!

I contacted mirage a while ago about their manifolds and i noticed that the email address they replied from was different to the one i sent too. It might be worth you trying this email address:

miragemotorsport@hotmail.com

Hey Iain, when we going to get them manifolds????

The following is their reply to my question i should think you will all find it quite interesting:

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your enquirey. The manifolds we make are intended to fit a Renault 5 spec T2 turbo unit. I have also used a T2.5 from Nissan Sylvia. It is the stud pattern (for mounting the unit) that is the deciding factor as to iuf the turbo will fit onto the manifolds. Compressor and turbine housings vary quite a bit and on may be a specific part for a particular model car, so its difficult for me to say what will and what wont fit. I can only say what i have tried and found to fit correctly.

Turbo chargers with the same basic model number (i.e. T2 or T2.5) can be quite different in performance characteristics. The "T" number really refers to the centre section, the parts that the shaftspins in and has all the bearings and in some models a water cooling gallery. So we could have two T2 turbos on the bench and they could be quite different. I wont go into detail, but the difference is in the sizing of the compressor and turbine wheels and there associated housing.

To be honest with you i would not worry about what turbo to use. I STRONGLY reccomend a Late water cooled Reault 5 spec unit. It gives great driveability with boost coming in nice and early (around 2500rpm) and still gives loads of power (more than any mini can handle). The only time i would consider chganging from this turbo spec is if i was building an outright drag racing engine or similar. On the road i think you'd find the Ren 5 unit virtually impossible to beat. They can also be got hold of quite easy and and at reasonable cost.

Some reconditioners do not seem bothered about having a unit in part exchange and will sell you a turbo outright. If you use one that does want a part ex then see what they will take and try and find one in a scrap yard, so long as it spins freely and the turbine and compressor are not rubbing the housings the unit should be ok for the rebuilder.

Well hope that answers your questions for now. If you need any further info please dont hesitate to ask.

Regards

R J Barnett

Hello there, I was just wondering what turbos are suitable for the manifolds that you make for the mini. I have read the part where you mention T2's and T25's can be used.

Unfortunately I am not that familiar with how different models of
turbochargers alter, are there any sort which are preferred ie. Renault 5 gt turbo, Fiesta Turbo, or can you go for the newer GT series of Garrett turbocharger that are fitted to newer cars?

Also would I be better off to exchange my T3 turbo that came off the original metro turbo for a T2 of some description. Or buying a second hand T2, and having that overhauled?

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Dan Howard
