after very nearly a year in the garage its nearly all back together with shiny new paint some more more new bits nearly everything is in place but now i am on the wiring, what should be very smooth just isn't working:(
i have an alternator that i bought a few years ago and never had a problem with, but when i connect the battery the main battery cable gets very hot then smokes! if i leave all he connections on and disconnect the alternator plug then it is all ok, but connect it again and the same happens.
i really am stumped and i don't have a spare alternator and money is tighter than ever so is there anything else i could check before trying to beg for another one?

really would appreciate any ideas as i am all out of them:(

thanks. Dan

I work near Bradford. Can chuck you an alternator in the car if you want to try another one.
