Should it be possible to remove this with the engine and box bolted together? Im asking because I replaced my timing backplate gasket the other day, and whilst scraping to old paper gasket off the block, I managed to move the half moon seal and then remove it by hand? *Confused*

I didn't appear to be damaged and it wasn't leaking, so Ive popped it back in (only fitted 6 weeks ago)with some sealant. I just wonderd what actually holds them in place...is it just the timing back plate pushing against the lip or is it the pinching of it between the block and gearbox?

Cheers
Matt

It should be slightly compressed as thats what creates the seal. Did you put any silicone on itn when refitting?

I seriously doubt it!

IIRC, it has 2 or 3 three raised lips around the outer circumference which "fold over" to make the majority of the seal and it is slightly longer than the 1/2 circle so it compresses a bit to seal on its ends.

Can't see any reason why it can't be pushed in from the outside with the steel plate off as the raise locating lip is on the outside.

BTW, I use red rubber grease rather than sealant, just a personal preference, it allows the lips and ends to slide about while they are being compressed into place.

Yeah I put some RTV sealant on in(always have done). It was a good push fit to get it back in, but ive seen alot of threads saying you need to split the engine/box to replace it, which made me think something might be wrong?!

I always chop some length off mine. I didnt last year and it was the first one i had to leak.

Is this the normal thing to do?
It doesnt sound like it reading this thread

I chop a bit off mine too as they are usually too long.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I've never chopped anything of the end - they appear too long but (IMO) that is how they compress into place. If they were the "right" length there would be no compression on the end faces.

Again, it's why I use red rubber grease to allow them to slide around while being compressed.

But, as I said earlier, it's just my way of doing it.

Silicone or RTV is just a gap filler in this case, it doesn't adhere to any sort of rubber/nitrile/etc. just fills the gaps on a badly fitted seal.

Just my opinion.

No offence was intended Paul, but if the seal fits right, why use silicone or RTV ???

You wouldn't use it on your brakes, which are a similar lip seal design....

OK, bad example to make a point as brake seals move, rather than being static, but the half moon seal is the same principle if you look at the clever bits around the outside of it.

But the use (or mis-use) of silicone/RTV is, as I said, just my personal preference.

IMO it's only for metal to metal so the only place I've used it on a Mini is the later diff housing which has no gaskets.

The real problem is that you can no longer get the ridgid backed seals, so RTV helps. If Rover used RTV on this seal at the factory, thats a good enough excuse for me to do the same? It's clearly a belt and braces thing, and that is not such a bad thing. I certainly wouldn't call it miss use.

Because of this thread my half moon seal has started to leak. Only after 120 running miles.

Thanks very much guys.

I will be splitting the engine yet again but it’s an excuse to change the drops because the gearing is just to short for the road.

RTV will be being used this time.

Same here. I put RTV on every gasket :) If needed or not - I feel better with doing it this way and so far the engine deosnt leak. Not that much anyway *happy*

On topic: the halfmoon seal looks way too long, but once fitted it sits realy tight. And RTV helped me to keep it in position on assembly.
