hi chaps, at work we have a 4 yr old 5hp self propelled mower with blade disengage

the engine starts/runs fine, but there is a horrible grinding crunchy noise, but when you engage the blades to cut grass, it dissapears entirely and the mower runs fine

im presuming the clutch to the blades is on its last legs, but it seems odd as its the newest of half a dozen mowers, some twice its age and those are all ok?

never had one apart though, anyone on here know anything about them? or shed any light on this?

we also have another where the drive to the roller at the back slips going up slight inclines, but ill tackle that job later

cheers

joe

Im a horticutural engineer for my local council, i maybe able to help.

whats the model / type of mower? Their are LOADS with verious types of honda engine.

If it uses a magnetic clutch to engage the blades then i presume its belt driven.
These can go faulty but normally just disintergrate and then fail.
The grinding noise can be a bearing on one of the pullys or maybe a loose blade.
May even have something caught between the blades or the deck being damaged.
Any chance of some pics?

haha im not a gardener its the posh term for mower mechanic.
Its alot less stress than working within a dealership or other type of garage. I love it as a job although the only real bad sides can be that some of the machines stink of dog shite and i suffer from hayfever which is abit crap.
