Hi all,
Im taking the mini on a track day round oulton park on wednesday and am a little unsure on what the best tyre pressure is.

Im running 175 x 50 13 Yoko AO48R tyres in medium compound. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Andy

A lot depends on the suspension set up but start about 5 psi higher than you run normally. Then measure the before and after pressures - when you come in you are looking for a rise of about 5psi any more and the tyres were too low to start with - any less and they are too high!

Also driving style - the edges of your tyres should not look scrubbed after your track day if all is well

I read some where that Yokohama design the A048 tyre to have a hot running pressure of 32 PSi. The way to find what the cold pressure is for the car/ tyre combination, is to start with 32psi, then get the tyres hot on a couple of laps, and then imediately check the pressures, if it has risen, drop it back to 32psi, repeat this until the tyre pressure is 32psi hot. Let the tyres and wheels cool then measure the cold pressure, and that is what you should set the pressures at on cold tyres to achive 32psi for that car.

I can't find the refference, which is a bugger.

Does that make sense?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I would expect the same theory applies as it is a track day tyre of similar construction.

I run my AO32rs at 32/28 which sees about a 3-4psi increase with temp.

I run A048Rs and have found the fronts at 36 and rear 34 to be a good balance in the dry.

On the road i think its a little different, i run 30/28 on the road.
The temp is different as well as conditions they run in, so its down to preference then.
not too low if its what feels good. how is tyreware acros the thread. at that psi id expect more at the edges.

Today was a great day at Oulton Park and the tyres were fantastic. I found that they performed best at 30 psi cold and they were gaining about or 5 psi when hot.
Thanks all

grip (in corners) or Traction (under acceleration and braking)?

The tyre has to be a comprimise on both if the track or road is not straight. A low pressure will put more of the tread on the ground, but will roll in the corner and pull tread away from the ground. A higher pressure tyre will put less tread on the ground on the straight, but will roll less in the corner and have more tread on the ground.

To be honest, if Yokohama say the operating range of the tyre for best performance is 33 to 36psi hot, for any A048R tyre/ car combination, I would go with that.

Drag racing is a little different in that there are no corners on the 1/4 mile, or at least you would hope. In this situation I actualy found 22psi on the A048R to give an almost even wear on the nobbley little bits you get on new tyres I would think shoing that the tread if as flat as it is going to be.

Look at it another way, the contact spot of a lower pressure tyre will be an oval, while a higher pressure tyre will be more of a circle. Think of bike tyres, they are not flat, as they have to be able to grip in the corner as the bike leans over. similar thing with car tyres, but no where near as extreme.

What tyre pressure does John Flanigan run on the Metro?

Watch for tyre roll and sparks!
