Has anyone ever replaced one using a steel skin? My recent project looks like its had the skin bonded on, and as its going to be a road car I want it to be fixed on properly.

The skin on my donor shell is mint, and im thinking of cutting it off and fitting it to the mk1 shell. Im thinking of cutting it off just below the guttering and doing the same on the mk1 then welding it on all the way round just under the gutter.

Any problems doing it this way?

Matt

No mate, thats a lot of hard work to create a fuck up. Cut the donor skin off below the gutter as you said above, but then grind off the gutter leaving the flange of the roof skin in good condition, then plug weld it on

I seriously doubt it!

Yes. Lots of pic's in my build thread.

To get rid of the shot skin, use a chisel around the fold in the gutter, then grind the remnants out.

On the donor car, cut the entire roof of below the gutters, then grind the gutters of.

Then it's just a case of popping the skin in and spot welding it in. Only took me 20 months! That said, I was using a brand new skin so that probably saved me another year at the pace I work lol.

There was a few pages on how to do it in mini mag earlier this year

I would. PM me your name and address and I'll throw it in the post or I can fetch it to Avon if you're not in a rush.

I'll dig it out and put it with the rest of my Avon pile. Drop me a PM next week to remind me

Finishing, I wish! Still a big pile of panels left to fit. It started of as a quick patch up and drop an engine in, then the TM disease kicked in...

Don't bother bracing the shell, makes it easier to get the roof skin in to place.
