hi there

my gearbox is making strange noises, i want to see if anyone has any ideas, that may mean I dont have to take the box out to look to see whats wrong.

the noise sound like a tapping noise, when in neutral, that sounds a bit like a big end knock, but disappears completely when the clutch pedal is pressed. I was thinking maybe a gear has a broken tooth?? dont really know....
I know i am going to have to remove the box, but thought someone may have a magic easy answer!!!

It'll be drop gear related most likely. Sounds like maybe excessive end float in the primary or idler, could also be a failing nose bearing.

Needs investigation befor it self destructs IMO.

Just wind up the ignition advance a tad and it will go away.

when you get your head under the car it sounds like it is coming straight from the middle of the sump, i will get the box out over the weekend if i get the time.

I've got the same.
Changed bearings, adjusted idler end float, changed clutch and clutch bearing: noise is still here.
I think it's the clutch bearing, I've got exactly the same noise on the Maserati biturbo known to have this "problem".

Is there any whine from the gears (assuming a helical box)

Mine was similar noise with a faint whine, not long afterwards the idler bearings shat themselfs.

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.
