Hey All,

Just wondering how everyone has attached their harnesses(5 point and otherwise)? Especially people not using a roll cage.

Not very sunny swanage

to be totally honest, i wouldnt even consider using harnesses without at least a rear cage to mount them off. The rear bulkhead just isnt designed to take the stresses of seatbelt mountings in the propper orientation, (ie nearly horizontal, NOT down to the base of the seat)

not having a go, just my 2p

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

I appreciate you're input Nutter, and I know its not. I intend to be putting a cage in it next year, but I need to get it on the road this year as I have a kid on the way and I know the missus will try to put a kabosh on doing anything to the car once the baby is here.

the rear straps should be between 0 degrees (horizontal) and 45 degrees downwards.

i have been told that mounting the weld in plate on the back of the rear seat should be fine as it has a lot more strength in it than the rear parcelshelf.

have i been told wrong?

If you bolt them to the bottom of the rear seat back, this is only OK if the car has already got harness anchors. 80ies cars have if I'm not mistaken.

I made a bolt in harness bar that spans between the rear arches, three M12 bolts either side, and then bolts to the center of the rear seat back/ bulkhead with another 2 M12 bolts. Much better positioning of the shoulder straps

On both the race cars we have a large plated welded to the back seat and then 2 of the captured nut plates welded to that. I appreciate that people think it is not that strong, but we have had quite a thump in it and it didn't deform.

Attached to a cage is better, but if you weld in the parcel shelf properly it makes a good strong box, imo.

You know, I think I need to look at my mini again, I may be mistaken, but I think someone did exactly as you've described to my car, Ben...

For Info...
I just checked the installation instructions on my harnesses (LUKE) and they say that any mounting point used should be rated at 2000kg...

My mounting points are strong (mostly on the cage), but 2000kg is quite a loading!!

Too many projects!

Quick and dirty, just over 10T, this is for a grade 8 (6-line) steel bolt, as imperial threads are not rated in 8.8 etc as metric stuff is.

Tom, I can show you a grade 8.8 bolt with an imperial thread. They were the harness anchor bolts that came with Sparco bolt in E aproved four point clubman harness

8.8 is roughly grade 5, and we don't like using them in our engines, so why use them on something that might save your life. That was my thoughts anyways*oh well*
