Guys, I finally got my new motor started this evening.

TO my amazment, it started first turn of the key, instantly

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYLvIRMnJGk

As you can see, I've got no cooling system on there yet, but I was under the impression that this was OK just to fire the engine briefly, having read this article years ago:

http://minispares.com/Articles.aspx?ty=ad&aid=301

I followed that process 5 years ago when I built the last engine, and it did me just fine.

I only let the engine run for the duration of the vid above, but after just 30 seconds the centre branch of the LCB started to glow red!

The 45 was previously fuelled for a MSPD trackday cam (270/270 with 8mm lift apparently), and this is now running a kent 296 scatter. Timming was setup exactly as it came off the old running engine to within 1 degree.

Speaking to AlexF he's suggested it could be super lean or very advanced, but could either of these be so extreme as to make the centre branch glow red after 30 seconds? the other two wern't very hot at all.....

Am I over reacting? Or would the excessive heat suggest something more serious is wrong?

Cheers

Nick

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

OK cheers guys, so it's more likely to be lean / crazy ignition rather than something more arkward like cam timming?

Not very sunny swanage

check your tappets are set properly, i once had one branch of a exhaust glowing, (on a motorbike, but still) and that turned out to be a exhaust valve nipping up and jamming open when things warmed up. Probably not the problem, but worth knowing!!

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

after 30 seconds at 2000rpm Paul?

You use a 45DCOE don't you paul?

Any tips on altering fuelling just so I can get it running safe enough to take it for a little spin?

The exact jeting can only be determined on a rollers Prawn but if you use these as a base line it will be more than safe enough to take for a spin.

Idle jet : 55F8
Main jet : 180
Emulsion Tube : f2 or F11
Air corrector: 140

Idle fuel ajustment screws 2 turns out.

Ignition should be set to 28deg all in at 4500 rpm

odd that its centre only, that could point to a valvetrain issue on 2-3

But more often than not, glowing manifolds etc are down to retarded ignition timing.

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Definitely sounds lean as it is popping back through carb....although usually you need to be on the rich side for startup or the DCOE won't run. It probably would have stalled shortly if you tried to keep it going due to leaning out.

If I’d known your pants preference I’d have worn them when you came round!

You were right about the ignition chaps.

Bring an engineer, it seemed logical to me that all things that turn must turn clockwise. Obviously this isn’t the case with the dizzy (which I knew- just having a blonde moment) so when I set it up firing at TDC, and advanced it 6-8 degrees for static timing, I turned it the wrong way! So it was firing maybe 8 degrees ATDC. Making everything red hot.

Sorted the timing out, and put a rad on it, and it’s running REALLY nicely now. Going to take it out for a spin this evening and see what it’s like!
