worn valve guides?,
if you can park on a steepish hill,
facing upwards ,the oil should drain back down the pushrod holes and not be sitting over the guides

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Could it be your choke seals in the carb?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

If the choke seals in a HIF carb leak, it enrichens the mixture even with the choke not in use, it also makes it very difficult to get the idle mixture right

Hmm, interesting you should say that. Van runs quite rich on a fairly lean needle and has a very rich idle.

We rebuilt the carb but to be fair that doesn't mean anything when "numptyspeed" has been at it.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

How will running the engine in make the fuel mixture leaner?

if the compression is fine then i would go for the stem seals as they are 4 years old, and check the guides also.

i would uprate these to the viton stem seals used on the SPI models available from minispares.com

of all the engines I have ever built, not one of them has smoked beyond the first warm up after the cylinders have cleared
