As many of you saw last weekend John H has a new engine to play with in his lovely little Sprint.

The aim of the game for John was to make most of the power in N/A form and use the NOS as an additional small power adder, rather than trying to force massive amounts of NOS into a lower powered engine. The obvious changes on this engine over its "sister" engine in the South West hillclimb car is the addition of the 4 extra external injectors. We did this as an option to help with the NOS control, in reality the engine loved using these injectors in N/A from as little as 3000rpm - high load, all the way through to the top end of the rev range. So much so it picked up 6% torque over the "sister" engine all the way through the range. The trick thing with the 8 injectors is that they are not switched, they are phased in and out depending on load/speed - so there are no transient "lumps" in the response of the engine and neither set of injectors handles the fuelling 100% - the other 4 always provide a percentage.

There are 4 NOS injectors halfway down the inlet tract and the external injectors make sure the NOS is fully mixed before hitting the cylinder. As the engine is 131.8 bhp/Litre it is very efficient, the small values of NOS added are used 100%, ie you put +10hp in you get +10hp on top of what the motor does. All NOS fuelling control is handled by the Tornado ECU. The car still runs the "Maximiser" control box in the car which outputs to the ecu and allows the ramp in times/percentages to be dialled in as before.

John had it out at Avon for its first shakedown and it went really well all weekend bar an electrical glitch on Sunday, running a 12.5 @111mph with an ok 60ft time - he'll be out at MITP, really looking forward to seeing this awesome little car get dialled in some more!

Loved the car when I saw it with you guys a couple of weeks ago.
Awesome sounding engine, and love the 8 injector thing... If only for bragging rights.
But... How much had the cameraman had to drink? We couldn't see the car for most of the time up the strip! *happy*

mental - oh yes! the motor in blue matches the car perfectly, I'm sure there wil lbe some engine in car pics from one of the guys at Avon. I'll post the power/torque curve at some point it makes over 110 lb/ft between 5750 and 8500, peaking at 117 at 6k and again 117 at 7500. 87 lb/ft at 3000 isn't too shabby either!

Amazing, such smooth power delivery it sounds amazing, and 180bhp from an n/a is brilliant well done.

How is the engine been loaded up? Im not too clued up on engine dynos, and being ignorant it just sounds like its being revved on the spot.

Not trying to be offensive but im more used to seeing watching chassis dynos.

The one run i did do at avon was against this car i thought it was a bike engine it sounded brutal!

Cheers Ron

Starmag, the Schenk engine dyno we use loads up the engine at user defined rpm points - we usually start at 2k and run 500rpm increments for mapping. So if you dialled in 2000rpm as your start point the dyno would pull the motor up to that speed, then no matter how much throttle you give it or how powerful he motor is the dyno will always keep it at 2000rpm - hence it reacts the torque produced by the engine and this can then be logged, so at any speed site you can map the throttle positions from 15% to 100%, using torque generated, fuelling etc You'll see this on the video where the engine may be pulling 50% throttle one moment, then the taps get opened fully and the engine works harder but the speed does not increase - the dyno is holding the motor at that speed and allows the torque to be measured. You'll note we hold the motor at 100% throttle position for a good few seconds at each speed point - noticeable when the NOS is working in the vid- this is to allow the dyno to settle and give true torque readings - no flash readings here we let the motor settle before taking the readings, its hard work on the motor - especially up in the 8000+rpm regions!

So when you see the motor ripping up like it does that is pure torque pulling it up at full throttle - no rpm increase.

hope that makes sense!

On a engine dyno I think its the flywheel that gets loaded with some device and something presses on the flywheel to create load..... or something like that. might be wrong though.*oh well*

I'll bet that is a real hoot even with just a small shot of gas:) I knew it would have to have been something a bit special knowing the times John was running before his blow up. Where are the boundaries with these engines is anyones guess lol. I like it :)

Star Mag, An engine dyno bolts to the flywheel in one manor or the other and applies a braking force direct onto the crank ('brake' horse power), while a chassis dyno (rolling road), the cars wheels sit on a roller or rollers and the rollers apply a force through the tyres, driveline and transmission. the former is known as flywheel power and the latter known as wheel power

They both work in the same way

Especially if they are hard compound yes! Slicks need sideways movement to truely heat them
