plugged it in today and couldnt figure it out?

can someone run me through these queries please.

couldnt get it to connect to the computer through either the normal plug or a plug to usb connector, should the mjlj power light light up when it plugged in?

can it only be set up while it running off the car?

is it worth upgrading to the latest versions?

can i have a guide to how to get it to connect to a computer?

any help is really apreciated as im completly stumped.

the MJ needs to be powered for the computer to connect to it, the computer wont power it via the cable.
