Well the time has come to get a newer car, currently got a 2.2 astra coupe which i really like, but its getting a bit tired now.

Have been thinking about an 2.0L turbo astra convertible, but its the fuel consumption which is the killer, i'm currently spending £450-£500 a month on fuel on the coupe and that does 35mpg. So the convertible will make things worse.

The other choice is a Vectra 1.9 cdti 150. performance is pretty much identical to the coupe. But i wanted to know if you guys have owned one, and what the handling is like? And any issues to look out for?

In my opinion, step away from the vauxhall's and go jap or german. Whats your budget?

Opel and vauxhal are just european trading names for general motors!

Seconded. As boring and unrefined as they are, VW 1.9tdi engines combine the best of econonmy and erformance if you're going diesel. If you're driving that much, I think a 2.2 petrol is a bit of a silly move.

I had an Astra 1.9 cdti sri thing for a hire car for a trip.

It was very economical, very torquey etc. Well on par with a VW overall which surprised me.

A friends parents have a Vectra estate diesel, and think its fantastic too, they use it for towing their caravan

I was always a fan of the VW 1.9tdi...but I think some of the more modern ones, are nowhere near as economical as the older units.

A friend as a tdi caddy van, and can barely manage 40mpg. My dad has a DSG td golf, and it can just about do over 40mpg.

Some of the older stuff, would easily do 50mpg all day long.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

I've just towed my 205 to the Nurburgring with my 04 A4 1.9 TDi, it has done 34mpg towing. Not towing it will do anything up to about 52mpg depending on how you drive it.

I've always found vauxhall's on the whole to be dull.

I also have an A4 tdi 130. I routinly get 50mpg from it.

I've got a 08 golf bluemotion. Went to buxton in it yesterday trip computer said 70.7mpg! I usually find that the trip computer is about 4 or 5mpg optimistic. But 65mpg is stilll bloody good.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Somewhere around Swindon

i would only have a A4 now, my 98 plate 1.9tdi gives me mpg in the high 50's on a run

did the cambelt on it yesterday and that was surpisingly easy

I have always thought that. I'm on my 3rd audi now and am tempted by a BMW 320d tourer. The two things that let my current and previous A4s down are poor rear leg room and you don't get split folding rear seats as standard on a saloon. The boot is huge though and you can tow your house with it

You are right about general motors but Opel are designed in germany I believe and they don't even use much parts, US cars being so different ...

I have had plenty of Vectra 150 SRIs as hire cars. The engine is brilliant. Much better than the HDI that I drive, but the rids and handlind were shockingly bad. Also the switches and bits and bobs were crap. I guess if you have had vauxhalls before then you may already know how shit this all is.

Apart from the engine I have nothing good to say about vectras.
