This looks like a VNT, which makes it useless; unless you want to go where no-one has gone before. Well Alpa fitted a GT15 VNT, but has now taken it off, nuff said!

A little further reading would suggest that VNT turbos (variable inlet vain to the laymen) would be ideal for a small bore turbo application.

This particular unit was made in 09 so I would imagine contains the latest spec build materials.

Again I am on the edges of my understanding as to the application limits of different turbos could you give an explanation as to why these are not a good idea for what we do on here.

The problem with VNTs is controlling them, hense why Joe had a wastegate too.

There is an obvious advantage to low down boost, it just seems like a lot of hard work for little gain.

Joe doesn't run a wastage now.

You will find that this is way too small. Alpa had a go with a gt1749v which was too small. Joe uses a gt2???.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Come on then Joe how do you control the VNT bit?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

put boost onto the actuator, and open up the lower stop on the vanes to prevent any boost spikes

I have ditched any clever stuff for the time being

Mine was a VNT15. You may need an external wastegate to prevent turbo from going mad with hot petrol temperatures.
I was controlling it with an R/C servomotor. Diesel engines have a vacuum pump, that's how they are controlled through a pierburg valve.
