I have just finished stripping my engine down for cleaning and rebuilding and have a few quick questions.

I will be building a mostly standard turbo engine for now (due to moving house) so will be on a budget!

Should I replace the piston rings? They are standard metro turbo pistons and the rings look fine to me

Secondly, do you think this crank can be used or is it F@?ked, the engine has been lying around for a while and the end of the crank has be bashed about abit!

And now the most important part, what colour shall I paint the engine red or green? It will be going in a MK3 Cooper S lookalike similar to my first car (below) I wanted to make it original'ish looking, although it will probably have a cossy intercooler upfront :)

Thanks Matt

Crank looks fucked to me. Rings deffo need replacing, I've tried re-using and it smoked like nothing you've seen before!

Red car looks good though.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I would have thought the fact the crank you are thinking of using is totally fucked was somewhat more important than the colour of the car....

How on earth did you manage to do that much damage ???

EDIT - looking at the photo again it looks like you used an angle grinder and an oxyacetylene torch to take the flywheel off rather than the usual (non-damaging) puller

Sorry, i meant what colour shall I paint the engine.

I bought the engine off a friend of a friend for £50, think its been lying about on a farm for a while, but it is a genuine metro turbo engine

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Im not sure how to take this*oh well* Is it a wind up or, just some one that is not mechanically minded ?

Mind you, nothing that a bit of JB weld wont fix

I've never seen a crank like that in my life, nothing more than a paperweight now.

I think "was" a genuine metro turbo engine... would be a better description.

Seriously, I would try to source a crank that has had the flywheel removed by someone who knows what they are doing....

Before you spend any money, take the block to a machine shop and get the bores measured properly and the head gasket faces checked for flatness. Going by the state of the crank, the engine had a hard life. So the bores may already be badly worn and require a rebore and new pistons etc.

EDIT: All the fastest engines are black *wink*

Did you take the flywheel off the engine or was it already off?

That really is something!!

Contact Fastcarl on here.

I recon that crank can be repaired but you will lose the cut out for the c washer.

Worth a go if its the only crank you have.

Is this another one of those 'i poured sand into the inlet to port my engine' type, joke threads?

I'd say, use it. JB weld first as above.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

If the bores are fine and the rings were sealing. There is absolutely no need to replace the rings. In fact, if the current ones are sealing on a factory hone etc, it would be best to leave them as is.

Although that crank is well screwed. It's all good and well cutting off a flywheel that is siezed on, but any idiot knows not to cut the bloody crankshaft itself !!!

There was no flywheel on the engine when I got it.

The rings look fine, and so do the bores

Can you see 0.010" of wear in the bores?

The rings in our van looked fine, but it still smoked like a bugger.

This has got to be a joke, I can't see how anyone could possibly think that crank is usable!
