I have a subsidiary fuse board with individual circuits for all the above, all fed from a separate fuse on the main fuse board.

My question is - what sort of current does each draw, so that I can wire and fuse appropriately ?

I have used 2a for the MJ and 10a for each of the others, pro tem, but this suggests I need to allow up to 30 amps on the main fuse board which seems a lot.

Suggestions and comments please.

The MJ, being basically electronics, will draw very little so 2A is fine. EDIS the same.

But the coilpack really needs a 20A fuse because of it's peak (charging) current. It doesn't draw 20A continuously but a 20A fuse will both protect it, and prevent you from blowing fuses at random.

The AFR gauge will draw about 2-3A when it's operating the built in heater in the LSU sensor, much less once the engine is warm.

So, for the overall package, 30A seems about right for a protection fuse.

Certainly nothing less than 20A overall with a coilpack or you could get random fuse failures.

(mine are wired independantly, 20A for the coilpack and 3A each for the electronics, widebands etc.)

I just knew you would be the man with the answers !!

Many thanks, I will wire and fuse accordingly.

What prompted the query was that I blew a 10a fuse powering the coilpack, which , now, its obvious why.
I have a feeling that the intermittent cutting of the ignition system that I had recently is something to do with it too.

Remember that fuses only protect the wire before the fuse not the device after it. e.g. if you are blowing a 10A fuse on a 5A wire you will need a fire extinguisher in no time.

Wise words but it is a long time since it was pointed out to me that fuses are only to protect the wiring and not the appliance and the advice has stuck.

It is just very counterintuative and most people get it wrong so worth noting for future searches.

Good point.

Both AES http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/category/10
and VWP http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-...andardcable.php
(and probably others) have tables of the correct sizes of both "standard" and modern "thinwall" cable ratings to pick the right sizes from.
