Hi all just a quick question ... im genna start to rearrange/organise my boot soon, and was going to fit a varley red top (im fed up with battery acid everywhere in the boot !)
but looking in the tweeks book the 40 amp varley weighs more than the battery that is in the car at the minute , i know its not only a weight saving im after , but if im genna dish out that sort of money something a little lighter would be nice , so my question is this :

What Varley battery is best to use on a road going trackday/sprint mini , it will soon be running megajolt, electric fan etc , but hasnt got a heater :)

thanks in advance

Remember that you only need the battery to start. The alternator is what will be running all the kit.

If your car is not stupid compression and spins over easily and starts promptly then I would think a 25 amp hour would be ok.

How much does a normal lead acid weigh approximately?

I find a RT 15 fine with 12.5 compression. Ive not needed to charge it in over 2 years

I seriously doubt it!

I think my PVR25 weighs 4kg or so, so a really worth while saving.

On a low comp turbo engine I reckon you could get away with a red top 15 or 20 easily,

I run a PVR25 from Powervamp racing, which is a rebranded odysey PC680, which is equivalent to a Varley RedTop 25 (how's that for a tedious link?)

I'm running around 11.5:1 CR on my 1380 with a standard pre engaged starter, and it has no trouble starting it at all.

Even after sitting uncharged for 7 weeks after the engine blew, it was still more than man enough to spin up my new engine several times to gain oil pressure, then start it first press of the button.

dead impressed with the PVR so far, and it's much cheaper than a varley

That's good to read Nick, I'd been looking at Powervamp, but was considering a more expensive one. Their site says 6.1KG, but if that's a heavy estimate then even better.

I have a powervamp pvr25 too. Had one for a couple of years and it's fine. Just had to make sure I was using a good quality 32mm2 battery cable. Being gel you can lay them on their side too, which is useful for fitting in confined spaces (under seats etc)
