Morning all,

Basically last week i had a big end go on my estate, so i took the engine out, and put in a 998 A+ engine i had lying around, now i've finally got it to run, after dicking about with numerous dizzys.

So it runs, but when you try and rev it the engine just dies, and then i noticed a huge oil leak from what i thought was the tappet chest, then i noticed a dribble of oil on the front of the block and above the engine steady, so im assumining its not the tappet chest gasket, but the head gasket, and this would explain its poor running?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i really am at my whits end with it.

Cheers, Oli.

I can't see a lot of oil comming out around the top engine steady as there is no oil in that area. Do a compression test to check the condition of the head gasket.

Running then dying sounds carb related to me. Have you got oil in the dash pot and is the dashpot moving freely?

There was just a tiny drip by the steady, might have been there already, but oil is pissing out the other end.

Yup oil in the dash pot, and all is moving freely.

Yeah, i'll do a compression test when im home, i'll pick a head gasket up on my way home aswell, and may swap it anyway just to eliminate things.

I'll double check all thats been said though.

Got all this sorted for anyone thats interested.

The head gasket was knackered and compression wasnt good, so replaced that, which cured the oil leak.

Poor running was down to the fact the points kept closing up, went through 4 sets, and couldnt work it out, then noticed that the blue plastic had melted, this made me look to the coil, this turned out to be the problem, swapped the coil, hey presto running sweat,

then just had to adjust the fuel and air.

Cheers for the help chaps.
