Hi,

I am going to fit an electronic speedo and take a pickup off of the rear hub.

I am guessing a fair few of you have done this so was wondering if you could post up some pics of how you have done it so I can get something made up similar.

Would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Jon

I've just been doing this myself. I basically just copied what mike had done and welded a beaker to the adjuster.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

The easier way (and imo the better way) is to use the normal spedo cable. Put the end that normally connects to the spedo in a box and then fashion a spinny bit of that and mount the pickup on the side of the box. Easy. This way all the moving parts can be inside the car and the cable runs are much easier and not open to damage.

well mine is super ghetto compared to everyone elses, araldited the magnet to the outside of the drum, then cable tied the pickup to an L shaped bracket off one of the backplate bolts.

maybe someone needs to fashion something that can connect onto where the speedo cable goes into the gearbox? like the box idea from BEN but without the cable, just a direct skrew on majig? or would it be a daft idea

The problem with that is that it is still in a shitty place, plus there is no space round there.

Why weld anything to the rear hub at all? - I have a wheel speed sensor picking up off of the end of the stud.

Has been done successfully as a homemade job:

or just use one off an MG gearbox (R65)

I just made a bracket to hold the sensor and put a trigger on the pot joint - don't know if it works yet as I haven't driven the car.

"did you know you can toast potato waffles?"

my etb dash picks up off the nearside pot joint with a couple of magnets epoxied on. little alloy bracket with vr sensor bolted using 2 output cover bolts . Been using it like that for 3 years. passed 3 MOT's etc.

Won't using the pot joint make the speedo inaccurate when that wheel loses traction, or when cornering?

yes it probably does, but who cares that much? its near enough for road driving. I'm pretty sure a gearbox connected speedo will also be inaccurate when you lose traction?

I guess it depends on what you are using the speed indication for. Just an electronic speedo and it probably doesn't matter. If it is part of a boost controller it may matter.
