Interesting.

So what gearbox will be fitted, the one off the 1,6 to turn the higher torque of the turboed 1,4 in Mpg ?

yes the x16xel one .

well some progress today, and some set backs ..

got the exhaust welded to the flange to the rest of the system ,this involved timing dragging the welder out between torrential rain storms .but got it done .

this then meant i could take off the head and measure the piston dishes ,the head gasket was 1mm bore 77.6mm ,so with all the volumes ,the cr worked out to be 10.9:1 .... this is v bad !!

so after measuring all the heads i have and so on , i relized that the new head gasket i got today ,was 1.7 mm thick ,this brought thjings down to 9.9:1...still not brilliant , i was hoping for what the books say and 9.4:1..i assume that the wrong gasket was fitted before ..

so looks like tomorrow im getting out the animal bosch porting grinder ,and opening up the chambers ...what a pain , i really like the chamber shape as it is!

Is it not down to piston dish ?

On the Renault engines wich I know a little better, there is the same 1,4 and 1,6 brothers.
The smaller one having less stroke, identical bore and the same head so the difference is the 1,6 must have dished pistons.

If you are building an economical comical daily featuring an alloy head and I think I saw a mention of LPG somewhere, why not a low boost / hi comp setup ?

Not quite as fun but hey, it is an Astra after all ... :-p

addy, its going to be be a little bit low boost high cr , im trying for around 9.5:1 and 10 psi .
denis , interestingly ,what iv found with lpg tends to contradict a lot of the 'taken as read' info ..
burn speed seems to be slow at low rpm but faster at higher rpm ,also it wont take a lot of vacuum advance on a 4 valve , but will on a 8 valve ..it seems to exagerate chamber burn tendencies .

octane wise , i think its closer to 100 to 105 than 110+ ,maybe even lower depending on the butane content ,which seems hard to get info on in uk .

i know my 4 valve knocked like a barstard on 40 degrees vacuum cruise adv , on a 11.2:1,, which i dont think would happen on 110 ron .

so chamber gouging commences today !

phew ! well now down to 9.4:1 ,3.5cc out of the head .....noice.

ok ok , ill admit it ,there may have been a bit of porting as well :)
all valves ground in after having to recut the inlets ,all a bit out of round towards the edge of the chamber ..

so tomorrow is assemble the head and wack that bad boy onto the victim ...er ... sorry , i meant engine !

imagine commonly accepted knowledge being incorrect! as an aside im a bit gutted by that news, as i had toyed with lpg and a turbo on the ol' jag :) lpg+methanol? lol

what about adding a little beak to your expanded chambers to add some turbulence?

okey dokey ... got a fair bit done yesterday ,, got the block cleaned up ,and realized why the cr was high , its a recon block and has been skimmed well and truly !

then head on and all cam and stuff done ..

finished the zorst to the rest of the sytem too .

so now finalizing the turbo feeds and drains ,and then intercooler piping .oh ,created a new wastegate can from a combination of the original and a saab canister ,welding the rod without melting the diaphragm ,lots of wet sponge action !this should base line at 5.5 psi .

still waiting for my mixer ring ...and need some water pipe fittings which i hope to get today if i have time.

well wouldnt you know it , blimmen pinhole in the rad ,must have banged it with the manifold!
so off this morning to get the rad off a astra locally ,but it turned out to be a diesel ,so come home with it and then found the old 1.6 astra rad i had and used that .
had to made a wind deflector for the bottom of it cos it was 2 inches shorter .

finally got to this point ..

and this should work in a few mins/hours depending on youtubes efficiency !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti7gp4IgQS0

so accounting for days off and delays ,about 2 weeks to do turbo conversion, engine installation and head ported ....phew...pooped !!:)

edit to fix youtube link .

um ,well its a tad off tune ,but it seems remarkably good on 5 psi ,and has a lovely smooth idle .. one problem is the dump valve, its too close to the mixer ,so ill have to change its position .
