I have been doing some welding on my car today and yesterday and I now have an anoying wheeze / tickle in my chest! The only thing I can relate it to is the welding, are any of the fumes produced likely to cause this or is it just a coinsidence? It is not sore it is just anoying that I cant clear it. Has anyone else had this? Is there anything I can do to avoid it?

welding fumes can cause issues,

I've had chest pains before from welding, that zinc coating on sheet steel is supposed to be not that nice.

I have been using weld through zinc primer. Might stop that and see how I get on

Inhaling zinc is not very good for you.

I've come across air feed welding masks before and I'd definitely consider one if I ever have to do another big welding session.

leeds/wakefield.

last year i read a very frightening article about the effects of solvent cleaner and heat from welding, apparently it has something to do with Phosgene gas,

very nasty stuff.

Thats what I am a little worried about, my car was last painted in 2k. I know it is dangerous stuff to paint with but what about when it starts burning due to the heat from welding

Fumes from welding galvanised surfaces can cause all kind of things, even blindness.
I always remove zinc coating before welding, don't know about the weld through primer though.

welding can cause asma, lunch disease and all sorts of nasty shit! make sure you have an extractor or air fed mask! or even just a mask lol but its very dangerous stuff. i was 12 when i started welding and diddnt know about the effects of it, and i had asma for 4 years and still do slightly and i was only welding a little here and there but i had no extraction and it was in a tight space. :S

gulp indeed i have just started welding but doing most of my stuff outside, i imagine a bit of a breeze is as good as a ventilated mask?

if you have breeze thats good but not too good for the gas if its a gas welder. really, ideally you need no wind and an extractor about 1ft away from the welding area

I'm just scared of the argon as it's dense and can collect in your lungs if your welding overhead.

I also heard that getting an MRI scan can be dangerous if you do a lot of welding due to the amount of metal that can inbed into your skin, eyes etc.

you'll be fine, i had to get my face X-rayed before i went in the MRI machine just to make sure there was no metal in there.

At least they checked first, it must have been comforting to know your face wasnt going to come off and bounce around in the MRI unit. *hehe!*

Always wheezy after welding...think its due to actually doing some work.
Wheezing just thinking about it!

i work in a steel foundary and all the welders wear air tight helmets with respirators and use extractors for this very reason. Not 100% sure what it is but they wear them for a reason *happy*
