could be, but!
could be the rings, do a compression test to eliminate this

the oil at this grade will not help matters on a WORN engine 10/ ... too thin
better with a 15/... grade say 15/40 nothing less in my book in these motors.

Ok what oil would you recomend?? its a standard 1275 turbo running on 6psi.

i cant notice any smoke looking in the rear mirror,so it cant be that bad, i thought its normal for turbo cars to smoke abit when it comes on boost?

the turbo seemed in good nick before we put the engine in,as did the bores, and i rebuilt the head... maybe its the oil, says recommended for modern turbo's etc on the front. looked quite thin when i put it in...

i use valvoline 20/50. was ok on my last few turbos.

alot of people like the millers stuff too.

say nothing less than 15/40 thats my Opinion
i agree with iain 20/50 millers good oil

remember these engines were designed many years ago to run thicker oil than you have in at the moment a 10 grade is like parafin.

me i run 15/40 the old gtx cheap, and i change it under 1000 miles.
BUT SOME may disagree

synthetic oils or semi synthetic oils in this grade are better but you pay more.

Is it just me or can you not run synthetic oils in a gear box.

well go for what you want but 15/40 nothing less

20/50 would be better on a high mileage engine

GTX ?

DAN

the castrol gtx is 15/40 cost around 14 quid ish
its a Mineral oil, this is fine as long as you change it regular,
try it, it wont brake the bank and if it helps your worn engine to reduce the smoking well there you go

go to say synthetic which is more expensive and added protection if the above helps the problem do a search on oils on the net and it will put you in the ball park

the first figure say: 15/.... denotes the viscosity when the oil is at ambient temp
the second figure denotes...../40 when the oil is at correct operating temp: this is what it should stay in grade at

so the higher the number the thicker it is
the lower the number the thinner it is

hope this helps *smiley*

When mine was smoking on the over run it was the valve guides there wasnt any smoke when on the gas but a fair bit running into corners with the throtle of.I still get a we bit smoke at startup if its been fairly warm the previous run which I recon is the turbo I use 10-40 which I get free but I have to pay for thicker oil so I will stick to what I have.

sauber:

Synthetic oil is a man made blend of oils with various additives
The lubricating properties of synthetic oil is FAR superior to the old mineral oils you could purchase some 40 years a go, (when I was 260 years old.)
These oils stay in grade for longer, mile after mile after mile, on an average 100% longer. This Means less wear on your engine less frequent oil changes.
And less agro associated with using cheap oil and leaving that in well over the spec
But there is one disadvantage? The cost!

If you can afford it, use it, but say not with a newly rebuilt engine , as the reduced friction these oils provide your engine will never bed in correctly.
In this case use straight mineral oil in this period.
Oil has now developed into a whole new science over the last ten years or so.
It was pretty complex then when I set up an oil debris analysis scheme some sixteen years ago at one of the companies I worked for.

I suggest to anyone who is interested to search the net on the subject. They will be enlightened????..
May be start with miller?s oils????.or?valvoline

I use 10/40 part synthetic now only because thats waht i read in the Halfrauds oil book at work, not had any smoke but it does warm up quicker, i was running on 20/50 mineral before but i changed because i was worried about putting thicker through the turbo pipes. Thanks ill go for 14/ next time
