A coarse thread is less likely to strip as there is more engagement. A fine thread will put a great load on the joint, but in cast iron is more likely to strip the parent metal (the block).

Hence coarse in the block fine on the head nut. Probably why its not a good idea to use cap heads holding a head down. 1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.
