after looking at the post further down ( why 12g295 )
i have a spare head with the 12g940 casting the valves are almost touching they are as big as i expect can be fitted
any idea what is it off ?
was told it came from a race mini ?

sounds like it has been modified - post up some pictures of the chambers and ports and we may get a better idea

its quite rusty mind been lying around for the past 15 years
its quite well ported from what i can see but quite rusty on the photo and not so clear

To me that looks like it has a massive exhaust valve.

Whatever it is, it's no good for turbo use.

Looks most likely a 36mm inlet & a 31mm exhaust. The early "S" heads had this combination.

spot on on with the valve sizes and the porting looks more like a factory cast did the early s heads use a different casting to suit the valve sizes ?

The early S used an AEG163 casting, rare, and prone to crack between valves.
