O/T A4 1.9 tdi 130 cam position sensor

Had a look round the relevant forums etc, but no luck.

I've had an intermittent error in my ECU for the cam sensor, so I've had a look in the haines book of lies and it says it's just below the cam pulley and is easy to change.

So I've picked up a sensor and taken the cover of the timing belt and there's no cam sensor in sight. The hole in the back plate for the wiring has a blank in it where haines say it should be, but the sensor is def not there. I've had a good feel around. The replacement sensor looks like the one in the book and is quite bulky, so it would be hard to miss.

The car is a 53 plate, registered november 03. Did they change the sensor/location or am I just blind? I entered my car reg into euro car part's web site when I bought it, so hopefully I have the correct sensor.

The car runs fine, but fuel economy has been down by an average of 3-4mpg for some time. I think it is over fueling as it's quite smokey when you accelerate hard.
