hi everyone..

i bought an engine off ebay(i know, stupid me) and the guy said it was a turbo engine... so a few months later after rebuilding it and putting it the car, i take it for its first test drive and the clutch started to slip, which i found strange as the clutch looked brand new when i had it all apart. so now i want to replace the clutch and start gathering info and find out that a have a pre verto instead of verto cluth like the trubo engine should have, so this leads me to beleive that i have a n\a 1275 engine with the turbo bits, which from what i have read on turbo phils site is pretty much rubbish with out lowering the compresion ratio and getting uprated pistons, which i didnt do, so i was wondering is there any easy way to tell if it is in fact its a turbo engine or a n\a one? i dont have an engine number, so that possibilty is ruled out... pics of what i should look for would be awsome if possible.. as most f the things people talk about i dont even know what they are... im really a total noob at this, and since these metro turbo engines are so rare here in portugal, i didnt even know what to check for when it was being rebuilt...

i have treid the search botton and came up with usefull info but still not enough to solve my problem:(

thanks in advance..

cheers

Have a look at the valve stems on the head. The turbo heads have thicker exhaust halve stems.

Obviously, this only confirms the head. It couldjust be bolted to a standard bottom end.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

the pre verto clutch are often seen as an upgrade, there is a better assortment of parts available, the flywheels can be made alot lighter and stronger springs can be bought off the shelf

what pistons was in there that would be the simple est way to tell, the exhaust valve stems another but as said it will only give details on the head

Resident Cylinder Head Modifier

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

use a pre vertro set up flywheel ap race plate and double grey cover longer arm prevertro thrustbearing boss and use 3 straps per lug ........... the vertro clutch wont cut it.. when any decent levels of power are reached .........

Can't really tell anything from those pictures. Best way to check is the part number underneath the crown of the piston.

If you get really bored you can check the final drive in the gearbox, assuming its a standard metro turbo it will be 19/61 ratio, doesn't really tell you much but it was standard to the metro turbo so may put your mind at rest a little.

If the crank is stamped CAM6581 then it's definitely a turbo crank, although later metro turbo engines used CAM6232!

If you get a decent picture of the valve stems you may be able to tell, mine has metro turbo valves and it looks like this:

hi guys..

apbellamy, thats what i thought.. unfortunetly to check the part number under the pistons i have to take it apart, which i really dont want to do as i have just finished rebuilding it and putting it in the car...:(

AMP:thats a great pic mate.. will try and compare it to mine*happy* does that number also confirm its a turbo head? 12g940? also do you by any chance have a pic of the turbo exhaust valves and where they fit?

thanks everyone

12g940 is just the large bore casting

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

Lake District

Just look at the top of the valve stems if it has the larger 8mm stemmed Turbo exhaust valves you'll be able to tell just by looking as they're obviously larger than the inlet valves.
Not that it really matters anyway as a NA head can be used. 12g940 is just the casting number & does not define a Turbo head.

the inlet valves are marked with blue the exhaust valves are marked with red,
the green circle is around an exhaust valve stem and yellow circles is around an inlet valve stem
you can see in this pic the exhaust valve is alot thicker you can tell just by looking its quite a difference
