i have the plug that goes on the distributor, and have found out that that coil is off a cavalier, it doesnt have + or - on it so if i connect it up wrongly what will i break? gonna have to guess which is which.

You probably won't break anything as such but "conventional" coils are auto transformers (ie, the primary is wound in series with the secondary) so you wont get such a high voltage out if the primary is connected backwards. Check first with a DVM that the two low voltage connections are NOT connected in any way to the frame (ie, have no path to earth). If they do, it is not a "conventional" auto transformer and you could damage the module if connected wrongly.

Much more important though, if it's from a cavalier it is probably completely the wrong impedance for the Leyland/Rover electronic ignition module.

Why aren't you using the correct electronic ignition coil that belongs with the Leyland/Rover module ???

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
