Hi all,
Finally starting to get it together again after a hectic year!!!!
Phase 2 cam on the way from avonbar, oil pump, duplex gear, followers, gaskets all ready to go :0)
Being such a long time since i built up the bottom end i thought it would be a good idea to strip it again and start from scratch an holly crap am i glad i did!!!! Masses of swarf had built up in the oil galleries.... I can only assume that constantly turning the engine over on the stand has distributed hidden crap from everywhere!!!!
Now i would stake my life on it being totally clean.
All this shenanigans has made me question my decision to re use the shells i got with the motor, although new they are a tad scored. The engine machinest said they would be fine but its not his motor!!!!
He also said the crank was confusing, although its obviously new or reground its still on standard shells???? Sizes are mains 50.74mm big ends 44.33mm
Again engine guy said it would be on the loose side but would be fine..
Although a nice loose motor is tempting (only doing tiny millage in it) Im starting to think there's no short cuts when it comes to building engines!!
Sorry to go on and thanks for any light you may be able to shed
Keith

Never take anyones word for anything!

Always check the oil galleries,

50.74mm is 1.997"

44.33mm is 1.745"

from that the mains look like they might be std but the ends look a bit undersize, but I wouldt trust those measurements.

Do you have access to a micrometer? if so check the journels for ovality,

Also get hold of some plastigauge and check the clearance of the bearings.

with the oil gallery plugs outs get some thiners, desiel, petrol or anything else that will disolve oil deposites up all the oil gallerys, leave it overnight or longer,

blow it out with an airline if possible, then using a bit of welding rod or similar attach a bit of clean rag to the end by threading it on and bending the end over, bend a "crank handle" into the other end and insert it into the oilway and work it all the way through, whilst constantly rotating it.
Keep changing the bit of rag until it comes out clean,
make sure you do all the oilways, the big one across the engine, the three that run down to the mains, the ones to and from the pump, the one from the oil filter, the two that run to the cam bearings, the one up to the head, and the ones for the oil pressure relief.

Its well worth giving the block a good going over with a jet wash and degreaser too, trying to squirt up the galleries as much as possible.

I got this set of engine cleaning brushes fro Frost and they were invaluable. http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?pro...ng%20Brushes%20[Set%20of%204]

I put some paraffin in a clear bottle, and just kept brushing and rinsing until the brush came out of the gallery clean.
