Hi all,
Stripped the engine down last week finally. Only to find a build up of rust by cylinder 4 after taking out the water pump.
Is this a common find for engines being striped for the first time?
I'm under the opinion if its like it at cylinder 4 it is all throughout?
So final question how can I shit it would a diesel soak, jizzer and some cleaning brushes do the job? Or is it going to take something more? Or will I have to get it put in a boil out tank or something?

Cheers Arran

Some machine shops have an acid dip
Tank, but I'm
Not sure if that'll shift rust. There should be no rust in the waterways if you used the correct dose of coolant (it's an oxide inhibitor as well as antifreeze)

It wasn't me that had the engine at this point was bought out of the car,
Suggesting its been sat a little while :/
The rust just surface rust as such there is just a big build up of it so would an acid dip sort this?

Can you post some pictures? Surface rust is no real surprise in the coolant circuit.

right some pictures up,

It looks like surface rust for sure, just want it nice and spotless :)
So would it be sorted with a diesel soak? or would it need something a bit stronger?

I was impressed with POR's metal ready when I sealered my fuel tanks,

it left the rusty insides of the tanks looking like they'd been shot blasted.

I wouldn't mind about that. That's nothing. As long as it isn't flaking off, don't worry.

I'm with Vegard, that's fuck all for a cast iron block that's been left to dry out.

If there is any loose stuff, blow it out with a pressure washer but otherwise leave it alone and use antifreeze from now on (because of the inhibitor it contains).

Be very wary of so called chemical cleans or acid washes.......

Often they use a derivative of sodium hypochlorite (actually alkaline, not acid) which can do serious damage to older cast iron through de-graphitisation (removal of the carbon, which is an essential part of cast iron, from between the grain boundaries).

If it's mechanically sound, just remove any loose stuff and leave well alone IMO.

If i give him a blast out and a soak in Diesel and Jizzer will shift the most of it?

i didnt quote the price because i was quoted "off the books" but would guess about 25-30 quids

although Rod has me thinking, my block is not bad at all i might just give it a good bath*happy*

What I would do, is to countersink the holes for the waterpump.
