ideally would like to run a large intercooler in the grill area. this wouldnt be a problem really until i decided id actually like to have a grill so that it looks alittle less obvious that it is turboed.

im getting a cuomer intercooler made anyway but my question is...

would it make a differeance if i had a large but thin intercooler compared to a smaller deeper one. so say a grill sized intercooler but only a inch thick

thanks

Have a look at my pics. My intercooler just fits behind the grille, is only about 50mm thick and seems to do the job nicely.

For reference Matt Woods' cooler is of similar proportions.

from memory, ( trying to quote from the book max boost)

if you double the thickness of a cooler you only gain 25-30% more cooling making it less efficient overall, so reducing the thickness does the opposite

you do however still need to flow enough through the core so thinner but taller is the answer ( assuming left to right flow of boost pressure)

a longer cooler can cause a larger pressure drop across it ( more resistance to boost flow)

its a compromise between all 3

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

Somewhere around Swindon

mines behind the grill:

i made a cardboard template (cad) then bought the closest undersized core from pace made the endcaps and got a mate to tig it up, no science or math for me just what fitted and looked right

Do a search on AUDI TT on this forum. You'll find my setup, I am using a TT intercooler behind the grille and it works perfect!

Intercoolers are a compromise to fit in the space available. Taken to the extreems, thin is bad, thick is bad, short is bad, long is bad.

I've got a 4 inch deep intercooler that was designed for an mr2 I've just managed to fit it in with a small modification to the cross beam where the bonnet locks into. (sorry don't know the technical term) :)

1/4 mile in....??
